Leo Crawshaw-Bond, guitarist for Tāmaki Makaurau-based indie pop rock band PARK RD speaks to us for New Zealand Music Month and reflects on working as musician in Aotearoa.
Formed in high school, PARK RD has grown into a five-piece outfit making waves across the country — but as Leo reflects, the journey of a working musician in Aotearoa can have its challenges.
Making a living through music in New Zealand isn’t always easy. Leo speaks candidly about the financial pressures that come with being an artist in a small market, and the importance of community support — not just from fellow musicians, but from the places and people who play their music.
From restaurants to retail stores, when local businesses choose to play New Zealand music, it creates a meaningful connection — not only with customers, but with the artists themselves.
“It feels really great when stores support local music by playing New Zealand artists,” says Leo.
I feel like, yeah, wherever I am — in a restaurant or whatever — if the music's good, I’m more likely to come back. I’m more likely to have a good time.
Leo also highlights the value of businesses holding a OneMusic licence, which helps ensure that the artists behind the music are fairly compensated. “It’s great because they’re supporting artists — and every little bit counts.”
He describes Aotearoa’s music community as a small, tight-knit one — a place where artists know and support each other. That sense of mutual backing is essential, and licensing music properly is one way that businesses can contribute to a sustainable future for Kiwi music.
The fees you pay do go to artists. It’s really important that New Zealand artists are supported properly so that we can continue making the music we make.
OneMusic exists to help businesses understand the importance of playing their part in the music industry ecosystem. By paying a music licence for using background music, you're ensuring the rightsholders behind that music get paid their fair share.
