Singer Songwriter Arahi: Supporting local artists is huge.

The next artist being featured for this year's 25th New Zealand Music Month is local singer songwriter Arahi, a prolific collaborator and talented musician with a soft spot for heartfelt folk.

Harking from the Hawkes Bay, Arahi shares his thoughts on the New Zealand music scene, and what's it's like making a living as a musician in 2025.

Arahi speaks to OneMusic and shares their thoughts on what it's like to make a living as a musician in Aotearoa.

"...it's not a conventional way of making a living. It's not even a very common way of making a living - even for musicians. Most are just battling, constantly you know."

When asked about music licensing Arahi describes the difference receiving royalties actually makes,

When I think of royalties, I think of the little things coming through on my phone and being like, I could really do like a proper grocery shop. I could go in there and get like actual, like grown up stuff you get from the grocery store.

I mean, supporting your local artists is huge. Like, because New Zealand is so small and the music scene's even smaller in some ways, it is actually so close for that money to go (from) OneMusic licensing to the artist. It's pretty straight forward and immediate, and real I guess.

OneMusic exists to help businesses understand the importance of playing their part in the music industry ecosystem. By paying a music licence for using background music, you're ensuring the rightsholders behind that music get paid their fair share.
