This year marks the 25th anniversary of New Zealand Music Month—and to celebrate, we sat down with Kiwi rap powerhouse Jujulipps for an exclusive interview.
Known for her bold energy and razor-sharp flow, Jujulipps shared her thoughts on what makes Aotearoa’s music scene so special, and why supporting local artists through music licensing just makes sense.
“Music affects everything. Girl, have you ever been to an absolutely silent cafe? You know what I mean?”
From quiet cafés to packed-out festivals, Jujulipps reminded us how music brings spaces to life—and why it’s more than just background noise.
“We’ve just got such a growing scene and it’s so vivid.
Having something that’s local, it’s on the scene, it’s hot.”
She also touched on what it means for musicians when businesses step up and do the right thing by licensing music.
“You enjoy the music, and you want it to keep happening...
There are resources that are needed for that to continue, and we can’t ignore that, you know.”
What the OneMusic licensing does is that everybody gets a share of the royalties… whether it’s being played in a wee café, or a really cool festival—it comes back to us as a whole.
As more businesses start seeing music licensing not as a cost, but a contribution, Jujulipps hopes that this kind of support becomes the norm.
“No, this makes sense. We’re paying this amount because... these are all going to the people who have worked so hard.”
As for what’s next?
“The next ten years for Jujulipps are gonna be mad.”
We believe it. And with the support of music lovers, venues, and licensed businesses around the country, the whole NZ music scene is only going to get louder.
Stay tuned for more local artist stories throughout New Zealand Music Month.
