Step into any Daily Bread bakery and you immediately feel it. Warmth, energy, and the sense that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. While the smell of fresh bread and great coffee sets the scene, co‑owner Josh Helm says there’s another ingredient that’s just as essential to that experience: music.
In our recent quick interview, Josh reflects on how music shapes the Daily Bread atmosphere, and why properly licensing that music is just as important as choosing the right songs.
Founded eight years ago, Daily Bread has become a much-loved hospitality brand, known not only for its craft baking - but for creating spaces where people feel comfortable, welcomed, and connected. Music, Josh says, is fundamental to setting that tone.
“Music plays a massive part. It’s all about the vibe,” he explains. "People don’t just come for the food and coffee. They come for the environment itself."
Like many operators who understand the power of music, Josh adjusts the soundtrack as the rhythm of the day changes.
“When I was on the floor, I’d be changing the music depending on the time of day and how busy the restaurant was,” he says. "In the morning you might play something more laid back. When it’s frantic and full of energy, you might put something more uplifting on."
This kind of intentional curation helps guide the pace of service, influences how long customers stay, and shapes the broader feel of a venue - all crucial elements for hospitality businesses wanting to create memorable experiences.
Music at Daily Bread is a team effort, even if tastes sometimes differ amongst the team. Josh laughs,
They don’t generally like my kind of playlists. But the ones that got all the love were the ones playing my ‘Old Dad’s’ music.
It’s a reminder that hospitality music doesn’t need to be cutting-edge to connect. Familiar tracks, personality and a bit of nostalgia can resonate strongly, especially in spaces built on comfort and community.
For Josh, using music in a business setting also comes with a responsibility.
“As a business it’s very important to be licensed under OneMusic,” he says. "It’s really nice to know it goes back to the artists. We expect people to pay for our craft, so we pay for theirs."
A OneMusic licence ensures that artists, songwriters and rights holders are fairly compensated when their work is used to enhance customer experiences. For hospitality venues, it’s a simple but meaningful way to respect creative work while using music to strengthen their brand and environment.
Daily Bread’s approach shows how thoughtfully chosen (and legally licensed) music can elevate a venue beyond great food and service. It builds atmosphere, supports the rhythm of the day, and helps transform everyday visits into memorable moments.
