Corporates, stag dos, hens’ dos, mates just hanging out and the axe-curious - Sweet Axe Throwing caters for everyone.

Corporates, stag dos, hens’ dos, mates just hanging out and the axe-curious - Sweet Axe Throwing caters for everyone. As it turns out, often to the soundtrack of perennial competitive classic Eye of The Tiger. OneMusic caught up with Head Axe Sarah Hilyard and Axe-pert Lloyd Bombell to learn more.

Axe throwing, wow! What can people expect from a session?

We put on a 2 hour session which starts with a quick safety induction and demonstration of how to throw the axe. Next step we give everyone in the group some one on one tuition and get everyone landing their shots.

Once everyone is feeling confident and comfortable with the Axes we get into the main event which is a double elimination tournament. Our Axe-perts will be with you every step of the way giving you tips on how to hit that bullseye, calling and adjudicating the games for you and ensuring everything runs safely and smoothly!

Does music play a big part of the axe throwing experience?

It certainly does! We have different playlists that we play for different groups. We play all styles of music, but the common thread between it all is that it will get you pumped up and ready to compete!

Have you noticed differences in the way people behave depending on the music that you’re playing? Is Eye of the Tiger a regular feature?

Eye of the tiger is on a pretty high rotation for us as we use it for one of our grand final games. It certainly gets the crowd wide eyed and excited, the Axes start getting thrown in time with the
music. It makes for an amazing atmosphere!

You recently set up shop in Auckland and Wellington. Did you know about music licensing before opening your doors?

Not really.

What were your first thoughts, and now that you know about how it all works, how does it feel knowing you’re supporting music creators?

We are only too happy to pay the licences and have the artists getting some residuals for the work.

What are three artists or bands you are excited about at the moment?

Tool, Foo Fighters and Mike Patton

What is Sweet As Axe Throwing’s desert island album? If there was only one album you could play all day, every day, what would it be?

Blood Sugar Sex Magic by Red Hot Chili Peppers. No matter how many times I listen to that album it just remains amazing!
